Safer Internet Day 2019 is on Tuesday 5th February and the theme for this year is "Together for a Better Internet". Safer Internet Day (SID) is an EU wide initiative to promote a safer internet for all users, especially young people. It is promoted in Ireland by the PDST Technology in Education and Webwise. Webwise has many resources for parents, teachers and students. Webwise have a very good guide for Parents available here: download Please visit their website https://www.webwise.ie/parents/ for more information. This year the pupils will be taking part in an art or poster competition. Come back soon to see the winners. Our school celebrated science week from Monday, 28th January to Friday, 1st February and a very enjoyable week was had by all! On Monday a number of 5th and 6th class pupils went to Microsoft and participated in the Dreamspace experience. Both children and teachers were inspired to see how technology can enhance education in exciting new ways. Every morning a science riddle was called out over the intercom with students competing with each other to be first to the office with an answer. On Wednesday we held a table quiz over the intercom including a picture quiz for junior and senior infants which the children thoroughly enjoyed. The teachers carried out various experiments in their classrooms during the course of the week much to the enjoyment of the children. On Thursday in the senior building, classes moved around to different classrooms to see different experiments carried out by different teachers while in the junior building, there was a display of various experiments in the hall for all classes. Predictions were made, questions were asked and results were achieved! Friday saw the end of science week with a CSI forensic workshop for 3rd and 4th classes. Children had to find DNA, examine footprints and fingerprints to find the culprit!! On Friday afternoon many classes watched a science movie or played interactive science games, a lovely end to a great week! Congratulations to all winners of our Christmas Raffle.
All proceeds go to two very deserving charities: The Peter McVerry Trust and St. Vincent de Paul. Thank you all for your very generous donations, and the purchasing of raffle tickets. The school raised over €1700, and we would like to thank all involved. 5th Class, Room 2, worked on ordering fractions in Maths today.
The class had fun working together to complete this activity. Now we can use these helpful fraction number lines to help us with this topic in the classroom. Congratulations to the girls and boys basketball teams who won their finals in Tallaght Arena recently.
Mr. Quinn and Ms. Ryan put in a lot of work and time into training their teams and we would like to thank them for their time and effort. We would not have been able to play the matches without the many parents who drove. Thanks to all! On the 15th November Fourth Class were invited to St. Mary's School for a very fun workshop with Dave's Jungle. At St. Mary's we saw many different animals including a tarantula, a rat snake, and an Alligator Snapping Turtle. We would like to thank St. Mary's for this great opportunity! Dave explained how the animals hunt, how they perceive the world, how they use their senses, what they eat, how they eat and how they catch their prey. Fourth Class then have the unique experience of handling and touching crocodiles, tarantulas, snakes and large lizards. Irrational phobias are developed through childhood and come to full fruition in adulthood, by exposing children before they develop fears they can then appreciate how wonderful the animals are. The children in 5th and 6th Class in St.Laurence's have been training hard over the past two months to be able to complete the run a marathon challenge in association with Marathon Kids Ireland. The classes had to take part in four running sessions a week in school.
The students ran their final mile in Santry on Wednesday 14th November 2018. Well done to all who took part and represented our school in Santry. Please be advised that Science and Engineers week will be celebrated in our school in January.
Tune in at 9.30 to Near FM (90.3 & online at near.ie) tomorrow 13th November to hear some of our pupils stories and poems. The show will be able to downloaded as a podcast too. |
