DreamSpace

23/10/2018

On October 23rd a number of 6th class pupils visited Microsoft's offices. Through immersive teaching and learning experiences, DreamSpace at Microsoft Ireland helps to inspire students and teachers to see how technology can enhance education in exciting new ways, helping them to realise the full potential of what they can achieve.

Our students explored 30 Years into The Future. They were faced with a world that's very different one from the one we live in now. Cars can drive themselves. Drones deliver the shopping. Robots do the jobs now considered too dangerous for humans.
Students had to solve the problems of an imaginary country where transport is non-existent and translation of skills doesn't exist. They had to work together to find the solutions.

Maths week is being celebrated this year from Monday October 15th to Friday October 19th where the children will have great fun engaging in mathematical activities and games throughout the week. The children put great effort into designing Maths Week 2018 posters which were on display throughout the school.

Children will participate in maths games, maths stations, answered mathematical puzzles and riddles as well as participate in various indoor and outdoor maths trails around the school.

3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes will attend the 'Murderous Maths' presentation by Kjartan Poskitt in the Helix and DIT. Kjarten is the author of the 'Murderous Maths' series of books (link). It is an interactive workshop full of mathematical trucks and it is very enjoyable. 6th class also have the opportunity to visit Microsoft and participate in the 'DreamSpace Experience'. The aim of this digital skills experience is for the children to be inspired by technology at an early age giving them critical thinking and problem solving skills.

On Friday, all children will dress up in clothes that have a mathematical theme and there no doubt there were some very imaginative costumes, if last year is anything to go by.

Also on Friday, the children in the junior building will engage in various maths stations and board games in the hall.

A very enjoyable day and week for all!

Buddy Reading

8/10/2018

On Friday 5th October we had our first reading buddy activity of the year. The reading buddy programme is a programme in which two or more individuals read together. For example, older students can read with younger students, A Reading Buddies program can help model good reading. It's an excellent opportunity that allows the children and teachers from both school buildings to work together to promote and model good reading. On Friday we started the programme by completing an oral language activity, 'Getting to Know your Buddy'. This was a great experience that allowed the children to introduce themselves to their buddy and learn new things about each other. It was especially beneficial for our newer students and of course this year's Junior Infants class. Everyone had a great time and we look forward to our next reading buddy activity next month.'
